“Our focus is on rescue and relief operations. Restoration will begin after clearance from district administration. A detailed high-level inquiry will be conducted and the rail safety commissioner will also do an independent inquiry," ANI quoted Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as saying.

Netizens were not particularly happy to hear the Railways minister’s comment. “Ridiculous to call the Railway Safety Commissioner for conducting inquiry after a train accident. Is he not supposed to be accountable for safety lapses? Let's establish an independent transport investigation agency like NTSB for authentic enquiry," said one user.

“The Hon’ble Railway Minister should own up responsibility, at least moral and put in his papers. It is high time that innocent lives cannot be allowed to be lost by sheer administrative oversight of railway authority," said another user.

Balasore Train Accident LIVE update

One user pointed out that the Railways had not conducted any recruitment for SSE, JE or safety officers since 2015. “They only focus on promotion and keep retweeting the tweets of the Railway Minister and the Prime Minister in the entire railway department," the user wrote.

A tragic railway accident in Balasore district of Odisha resulted in one of the deadliest train disasters in the country's history. The devastating sequence of events involved three trains colliding, leading to a staggering loss of life, with at least 233 individuals losing their lives and over 900 sustaining injuries.

The collision occurred near the Bahanaga Bazar station, situated approximately 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on June 2. The magnitude of the incident prompted the Ministry of Railways to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has made an announcement regarding the cancellation of all scheduled events in the state on June 3, which were planned to celebrate the birth centenary of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

This decision has been taken as a mark of respect and mourning for the lives tragically lost in the unfortunate Balasore train accident.
