Rajasthan: Man abducts woman, takes 'phere' in the middle of desert; Jaisalmer police takes action
A 23-year-old woman was kidnapped and forcibly married just days before her wedding in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district. The police have arrested the main accused. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

A shocking video from Rajasthan has gone viral on the internet where a woman is getting forcibly married. The video was shared by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on on Twitter and asked CM Ashok Gehlot to take cognisanse of the matter. Maliwal shared a tweet in Hindi saying, "This video is being told by the media of Jaisalmer. According to reports, a girl was kidnapped in public and forced to marry her by lighting a fire in a barren desert. This is a very shocking and frightening incident. @AshokGehlot51 investigate the matter and take action".
The video shows a woman being held in a man’s arms as he forcibly conducts what appeared similar to a wedding ritual by taking rounds around a fire, which is known as "pheras' rituals in Hindu traditions.
A 23-year-old woman was kidnapped and forcibly ‘married’ by one of the kidnappers just days before her wedding to another man in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, her family members alleged.
Throughout the video, the woman is heard crying as the supposed wedding takes place amid the presence of a few more people including, another woman and a man, recording the video.
The woman’s family members protested outside the district collectorate in Jaisalmer and demanded action on the matter. The girl's family had fixed her marriage for June 12 and the accused was threatening the family to disturb her wedding.
The Jaisalmer police responded to Maliwal's tweet. The police have arrested the prime accused. "In relation to the incident on 01 June 23, a case has been registered in Police Station Mohangarh, Jaisalmer and the main accused seen in the video has been arrested. Teams are being constituted to arrest the others," the police said.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data on forced marriages, more than 28,000 incidents of such cases reported in India as of 2021.
