Rajdhani train: Delhi-Mumbai in 10 hours, Delhi-Kolkata in 12 hours soon

Soon, you can reach Delhi to Mumbai in just 10 hours by Rajdhani Express. The Indian Railways plans to cut down the travel time of New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express by strengthening infrastructure under Mission Raftaar initiative. At present, it takes 15 hours and 30 minutes to cover the distance between Delhi and Mumbai.
In the next four years, Indian Railways plans to increase the maximum speed of Rajdhani Express in New Delhi-Mumbai route to 160 kmph. Currently, it runs at a speed of 130 kmph. The railways estimates to spend ₹6,806 crore to build the necessary railways infrastructure. Major overhaul in the infrastructure will reduce the journey by at least five hours.
Similarly, the railways is planning to complete the journey from New Delhi to Howrah in 12 hours. At present, it takes 17 hours to complete the journey between New Delhi and Howrah by Rajdhani Express. In the proposed plan under Mission Raftaar, the estimated cost for this initiative will be ₹6,685 crore. The Kanpur-Lucknow route will be included in the New Delhi to Howrah route.
Reducing travel time between the national capital and financial capital has always been on the cards for the Narendra Modi government. Indian Railways first introduced Mission Raftaar initiative in the Railway Budget 2016-17. The aim was to increase the average speed of all passenger trains by at least 25 kmph in the next five years. The principal routes that have been identified for raising the speed are Delhi – Mumbai, Delhi – Howrah, Howrah- Chennai, Chennai – Mumbai, Delhi – Chennai and Howrah – Mumbai.
In July, Indian Railways has increased the speed of 261 trains, by 110 minutes, spread across different zones as part of its Mission Raftaar. The trains include Vande Bharat Express train, Humsafar Express trains, Antyodaya Express trains, Tejas Express trains and Uday Express train, said railway official.
To increase the mobility, the railways have replaced 141 short distance passengers trains by Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMUs) and Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs) in 2018-2019.
