RBI Policy December 2022 Updates: The central bank maintained its 6.7% inflation forecast for the current fiscal year ending March while saying that the battle against inflation is not over yet. The central bank lowered the growth expectation to 6.8% from 7% seen previously. Prior to today's hike, the RBI had raised rates by a total 190 basis points since its first unscheduled mid-meeting hike in May and expectations are there for at least two more rate hikes in the current cycle including the one.

EMIs likely to go up

Following the repo rate hike, banks are likely to raise their interest rates on various loans. Borrowers are the most impacted due to these rate hikes. The borrowing cost gets higher and banks pass on the impact to borrowers. That being said, EMIs are likely to go up ahead.

‘RBI policy in line with expectations’

Sachchidanand Shukla, Chief Economist, Mahindra & Mahindra: “Today’s RBI policy was completely in line with expectations and probably the easiest policy decision since May for the MPC given the backdrop of looming global slowdown/ recession fears, the US Federal Reserve dialling down, the USD index coming off highs, Crude futures falling to $80/bbl and domestic imported inflation cooling off."

“However, there is a clear fork in the road where growth is becoming a much bigger problem even as it is too early to take eyes off inflation given the inflation persistence. Hence, it is reassuring that the Governor remains watchful on growth even as he has ‘Arjuna’s eye on inflation’."

“Going forward, the RBI will lean on data and strive to keep the environment conducive by focussing on financial stability and deft manoeuvring as Fiscal policy comes to the fore to support growth in 2023."

Expect bond markets to give up some gains: Lakshmi Iyer

Lakshmi Iyer, CEO- Investment Advisory, Kotak Investment Advisors Limited said, "The RBI MPC raised repo rate by 35 basis points to 6.25% with 5-1 vote. The stance remained focused on withdrawal of accommodation. While this was ours as well market consensus, it seems like we may not be fully done with the rate hiking cycle. The inflation guard continues to remain. Key to now track FOMC outcome in the coming week. Expect bond markets to give up some gains and trade range bound as global growth concerns dominate."

Market was expecting RBI to signal rate cycle coming to an end: Analyst

“RBI raised the repo rate by 35 basis points, which is in line with expectations, but the tone of the governor was hawkish. With the GDP forecast cut, he kept the inflation forecast steady. The market was expecting the governor to signal that the rate hike cycle is coming to an end, but this policy shows no signs of it. However, the market is not reacting much to the policy. It may not be a market event with intraday volatility," said Parth Nyati, Founder, Tradingo.
