RG Kar rape and murder case: A CBI court in Kolkata's Sealdah has declared Sanjay Roy as the sole convict in the RG Kar rape and murder case, which occurred on the intervening night of August 8 and 9, 2024. The punishment for Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, will be announced on January 20, 2025.

Experts suggest that Sanjay Roy could face the death penalty for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Alternatively, he may receive the least punishment of life imprisonment.
Sanjay Roy was convicted based on forensic evidence. Scratch injuries on Roy's body matched the blood and skin samples collected from the RG Kar rape and murder victim's fingernails. Additionally, circumstantial evidence, including CCTV footage and a Bluetooth headphone, was submitted to support the conviction.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) determined that Sanjay Roy was the only individual involved in the RG Kar rape and murder case, ruling out the possibility of multiple perpetrators.
What is the RG Kar rape-murder case?
A 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and killed at the state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata on August 9 last year. The victim’s body was found in the seminar room of the hospital.
The trial in the rape and murder case commenced in a Kolkata court on November 11, three months after the incident.
The CBI, which took over the probe from the Kolkata Police on the Calcutta High Court’s direction, has sought “maximum punishment” for Roy. The trial was completed on January 9.
Who is Sanjay Roy?
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10. The CBI, in its 45-page chargesheet submitted to the court, had listed 11 pieces of evidence to hold Sanjay Roy the sole accused in the crime.
“Sanjoy (Roy, prime accused) is a criminal. He will be punished, and whatever the court feels, that punishment will be given to him,” the RG Kar rape and murder victim’s father told reporters.
Sanjay Roy 'being falsely implicated'?
While the CBI court was pronouncing the judgment, Sanjay Roy repeatedly claimed that he was being falsely implicated and stated that he was merely following instructions from "IPS officers."
Sanjay Roy also claimed that he wears a Rudraksha necklace and questioned why it did not break if he had committed the crime of rape.
Judge Anirban Das assured the accused that he would be heard on January 20 and ended the 12-minute session on Saturday.
BNS Sections Sanjay Roy is convicted of:
Sanjay Roy was accused under Sections 64, 66, and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Section 64 says that one who commits rape repeatedly on the same woman shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than 10 years, but which may extend to imprisonment for life, which shall mean imprisonment for the remainder of that person's natural life, and shall also be liable to fine.
Section 66 of the BNS describes the imprisonment that can be imposed for non-payment of a fine.
Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita deals with the punishment for murder. It states that a person who commits murder may be sentenced to death, life imprisonment, or a fine.
