A Kolkata court found Sanjay Roy guilty in the RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case. The gruesome attack against a medical trainee had sparked a national outcry in August 2024 — with many calling for the death penalty. Investigators allege that Roy — a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police — had acted alone.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has sought the harshest punishment for Roy — presenting CCTV footage and citing his presence near the crime scene as evidence. Meanwhile the family of the victim has repeatedly questioned the probe and contend that “One person alone couldn’t have done this”.
What is the case?
A postgraduate medical trainee working with RG Kar Hospital was found dead on August 9 — triggering widespread protests and call for improved safety regulations. The family was initially told that their daughter had committed suicide before grisly details about the alleged rape and murder emerged. Roy — a civic volunteer at the hospital — was arrested the next day in connection with the crime.
The parents of the victim and many protesters however contend that there were multiple people involved in the attack.
“Not just one, but the DNA report shows the presence of four boys and one girl. We will feel some relief when the accused are punished. Until we get justice, we will keep knocking on the doors of the court and will also seek the support of the people of the country,” the father said ahead of the verdict.
Who is Sanjay Roy?
Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was charged with committing the crime and was arrested on August 10. The CBI, which is investigating the case after it was handed over to the agency by the Calcutta High Court, has sought capital punishment for Sanjay. The CBI also said in the court Roy was the sole perpetrator of the crime.
Roy told the court on Saturday that he had been ‘framed’ in the case. He also insisted that the perpetrators remained free and claimed that there was “one IPS involved”.
