NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday agreed to hear the bail petition of Congress leader P. Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate. Chidambaram had challenged the Delhi high court’s Friday order denying him bail in the case.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the bail plea before a three-judge SC bench headed by new Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde, and comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant. Sibal said the 74-year-old former Union minister has been in jail for the past 90 days, and requested an early listing of the case.

The case is likely to be heard on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Rejecting Chidambaram’s bail petition, Delhi HC judge Suresh Kumar Kait had said there were serious prima facie allegations against him that he was actively involved and had a key role in the offence being committed. He also said that such cases of economic offences affect the entire community.

On 23 October, the SC had granted bail to Chidambaram in a separate case filed by CBI in the INX Media corruption case.
