School holiday today: In light of the heavy rain forecast today, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, and several other places in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai Rains: In light of the heavy rain forecast for today, December 12, authorities have declared a holiday for schools in Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across several districts in Tamil Nadu. As per the weather observatory's latest report, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts received moderate rainfall.
Tambaram is the only district still under orange alert, as heavy rains are expected today.
According to the IMD forecast, Chennai's minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be 24.68°C and 27.61°C, respectively. The relative humidity is currently 80 per cent, with a wind speed of 80 km/h.
IMD Forecast for South India
- Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal: Very heavy rainfall has been predicted for December 12.
- Heavy rainfall is also very likely on December 13, 16 and 17 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
- Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema: Heavy rainfall is forecast for December 12.
- South Interior Karnataka: Heavy rainfall has been predicted for 12 December 12.
- Lakshadweep: IMD has predicted heavy rainfall for December 13.
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Heavy rainfall is forecast for December 13 and 14.
- Moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning is very likely at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during December 12-13.
Similar conditions have been predicted for December 12 over Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema and over South Interior Karnataka.
IMD Cold Wave Warning in North India
- Cold wave conditions are very likely over Rajasthan during December 12-16.
- Cold wave conditions will prevail in some parts of Punjab during December 12-16.
- Cold Wave conditions have been predicted over Delhi during December 12-13, over Haryana- Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh during December 12-16, and over Saurashtra and Kutch on December 12.
- Cold Wave conditions will prevail over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during December 13-16, predicts IMD.
- IMD predicts that cold day conditions are very likely to prevail over Rajasthan on December 12 and over Madhya Pradesh on December 13.
