The summit of the eight-nation influential grouping is taking place amid the growing geo-political turmoil largely triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and China's aggressive military posturing in the Taiwan Strait.Launched in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has eight full members, including its six founding members, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined as full members in 2017.

No bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Xi

On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held separate bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, there was no bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi.

It is for the first time that Modi and Xi came face-to-face since the start of the border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

SCO summit: PM Modi holds talks with President of Uzbekistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Samarkand on Friday.

Uzbekistan is the current chair of SCO 2022 whereas India will be the next chair of the SCO. Prior to that, President Mirziyoyev welcomed PM Modi to the Congress Centre in Samarkand for the 22nd SCO Summit.
