On expected lines, Sonia Gandhi has been re-elected as leader of Congress’ parliamentary party.
The decision was taken at a meeting held on Saturday which was attended by the 52 members of Parliament from the Congress who were elected in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.
"Smt. Sonia Gandhi elected as the leader of Congress Parliamentary Party! She says, ‘we thank the 12.13 crore voters for reposing faith in the Congress Party’," Randep Singh Surjewala, senior Congress leader said.
In her speech, Sonia Gandhi acknowledged the challenges before the party including the challenge of numbers in the Rajya Sabha. She thanked Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his leadership and urged the elected representatives to fulfill the responsibilities of an effective opposition.
" To be an effective Opposition, all of us Members of Parliament must have our finger on the pulse of the people, set the agenda in Parliament, ensure consistency and relentless follow-up of issues that matter, including through Standing Committees and other parliamentary forums," Gandhi said in her speech.
The meeting was also the first official meeting conducted after the party's working committee, which met last Saturday. Taking responsibility for the party's performance, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had offered to resign. Since then the leader has been keeping a low profile even as the party rejected his offer to resign.
In the meeting, Gandhi thanked the voters & Congress workers.
"He says, ‘every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the color of his skin or belief’," Surjewala said in a tweet.
Sonia Gandhi, is the only member from the party who managed a win from Uttar Pradesh. The party will now also elect a leader in the Lok Sabha.
The BJP sweeped the elections after winning 303 seats across the country. The Congress improved their tally from 2014 but managed a win in just 52 seats.
