The southwest monsoon is likely to advance into areas of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin, south Bay of Bengal, east central Bay of Bengal, and parts of the northeast Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, according to India Meteorological Department.

The IMD forecasts the critical southwest monsoon to arrive in Kerala on 4 June, subject to an error margin of approximately three days. This is slightly later than the typical 1 June onset date.

In its weekly weather forecast, the IMD said a cyclonic circulation is set to form over the southeast Arabian Sea by Monday. Influenced by this formation, a low-pressure area is likely to develop in the same region during the subsequent two days, potentially affecting northwest, south, northeast, and east Indian regions.

The weather system is expected to cause light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the western Himalayan region. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand may experience potential hailstorms this Friday.

Kerala, Lakshadweep, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka are likely to witness light to moderate showers with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds, and isolated to scattered rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh till Monday. Heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala from Friday to Monday.

The weather bureau expects similar weather over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the week ending Monday. Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal are expected to get light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during most days of the week.

Maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal by 4-6°C over Northeast India in the next two days, and heatwave conditions are anticipated to continue in some pockets over Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim till Monday. Heatwave will likely prevail over Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on Friday and Saturday, IMD said.

IMD does not see any significant change in maximum temperature over northwest India in the next two days and a gradual rise by 3-5°C thereafter. A rise by 2-4°C in maximum temperatures is seen over west and central India during the first half of the week and no significant change thereafter. No significant change in maximum temperature is seen over the rest of the country during most days of the week ending Monday.
