Business News/ News / India/  Box Office Collection: Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse posts record-breaking opening in India

The animated superhero film "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" has made a powerful impact at the box office in both India and worldwide. The movie features the Indian Spider-Man, Pavitr Prabhakar, and was released in India on June 1, a day ahead of its release in the United States. It is available in multiple languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, and Bengali.

Indian cricketer Shubman Gill has lent his voice to the Indian Spider-Man character in the Hindi and Punjabi versions of the film. Despite facing competition from the Bollywood film "Zara Hatke Zara Bachke" starring Sara Ali Khan and Vicky Kaushal, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" has generated strong word-of-mouth and is giving the Bollywood film a tough competition at the box office. The ultimate winner between the two films is yet to be determined.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" takes place a year after the events of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." The story follows Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he is recruited by his love interest Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to save multiple universes of Spider-People from the villainous Spot, who poses a significant threat.

Worldwide Box Office Collection:

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is expected to open with a remarkable $100 to $110 million in the USA and approximately $80 to $90 million in overseas markets, including an estimated $20 million from China.

India Box Office Collection:

In India, the film has shown significant traction, with the total box office collection currently ranging between 13.45 to 14.45 crore nett, according to producer figures. The film's performance saw a notable surge over the weekend, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, with an estimated collection of 6 to 7 crore nett on Saturday, 3.25 crore nett on Friday, and an impressive 4.2 crore nett on its opening day, Thursday. The four-day weekend is projected to reach a range of 24 to 28 crore nett.

Notable Achievements:

This opening places "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" as the fifth highest Hollywood movie opening in India in 2023, following the likes of "Fast X," "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania," "Guardians of the Galaxy 3," and "John Wick 4." Interestingly, the first instalment of the franchise collected only 9.15 crore nett in India back in 2018, highlighting the surge in popularity of the Marvel fandom in the country. The film is poised to become the biggest animation opener in India and is projected to achieve an impressive opening of $200 million worldwide.

Audience Reception:

The film, Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse had sold 40,000 tickets in its advance booking in national multiplexes.
