In a major reshuffle, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today appointed Sukhbir Singh Sandhu as the Chairman of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
Sandhu is 1988 batch IAS officer from the Uttarakhand Cadre was the additional secretary at the department of education and will replace NN Sinha, who was appointed as the secretary, department for border management on Tuesday.
Sandhu's appointment comes soon after the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) raised red flags over the highway authority's 'excessive expansion' and said that NHAI should discontinue constructing roads and encourage the private sector to take over the running of completed projects.
In another important appointment, Arving Singh has been appointed as the Chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI). In August, the aviation regulator had appointed its board member Anuj Aggarwal as the Chairman after Guruprasad Mohapatra was appointed as the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) secretary.
