New Delhi: Senior leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia on Sunday announced extension for summer vacations by a week for all Delhi schools.

Classes till eighth standard will be getting an additional one week of holiday, however, the rest of the classes will start as per schedule.

Schools will now open from 8 July and this also includes the private schools.

“Looking at the hot weather in Delhi, summer vacations for schools up to class 8 are being increased for one week. Children's school will open from 8 July till 8th. The school for the remaining class will open according to its predetermined schedule," Sisodia tweeted in the afternoon.

Delhi has been seeing extreme temperatures since this month with a temperature rising to a maximum of 49 degrees Celsius. The average temperature of the national capital has not gone below 40 degrees this summer.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) last week has predicted that monsoons are likely to make an onset in Delhi on 3 July after a delay of four days.

"A low-pressure area is likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal on 30 June which will cause easterly winds to move towards north India and help the monsoon advance," senior scientist at IMD, Kuldeep Srivastava had said.

On Saturday, the city was warned of a heat wave as the maximum temperature settled five degrees above the normal. People in Delhi woke up to a warm morning on Saturday with the minimum temperature settling at 30 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal.
