Women in Afghanistan have been reeling from one of the worst phases of their lives since Taliban seized the Islamic nation in the year 2021. The conservative forces continue to tyrannize over women, undermining their freedom.
The Taliban has now in a new verbal decree, banned women's beauty salons in Kabul and other provinces across the country, TOLO news has reported citing a spokesman for Taliban Ministry of Vice and Virtue, Mohammad Akif Mahajar.
TOLO News is an Afghan news channel broadcasting from Kabul.
The ministry has also ordered the Kabul municipality to bring the new decree of the Taliban leader into effect and cancel the licenses of women's beauty salons.
Sharing their ordeal, Raihan Mubariz, a makeup artist told TOLO News, "The men are jobless. When men cannot take care of their families, the women are forced to work in a beauty salon to find a loaf of bread. If they are banned there, what can we do?"
Another makeup artist said, “We will not get out of the home if men (of the family) have jobs. What can we do? We should starve to death, what should we do? You want us to die.”
Since the Taliban has come in to power, it has banned girls and women from going to schools, universities and working at NGOs as well as going to public areas such as parks, cinemas and other recreation areas. Earlier in April, Taliban banned the entry of families and women into restaurants with gardens or green spaces in Herat province. According to Afghan officials, the move has been made because of gender mixing or because women allegedly are not wearing the hijab.
The other kinds of bans that the Taliban imposed on women are shutting girls out of classrooms beyond sixth grade; not allowing women to go to universities, restricting most types of employment opportunities, such as jobs at the United Nations, and the prohibition of going to the gym. Women in the country are also prohibited from leadership posts, and not allowed to work as well as travel unless accompanied by a male companion.
Kabul resident Abdul Khabir said: "The government should make a framework for it. The framework should be in a way that neither Islam would be damaged nor the country."
The imposition of restrictions on Afghan girls and women by the Taliban has sparked reactions at both the national and international levels.
