Tamil Nadu witnessed the highest spike in coronavirus count today as 17 fresh cases were reported from the state. With these new cases, the total number of COVID-19 patients in Tamil Nadu surged to 67.

As many as 10 new cases were confirmed from Erode, said Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami. All of them were direct or indirect contacts of two Thailand nationals who had earlier tested positive for coronavirus infection. These fresh cases were identified through contact tracing, confirmed Tamil Nadu health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar. All patients were admitted to hospitals.

On Sunday, four members of a family, including a 10-month-old baby in Coimbatore confirmed positive for COVID-19 infection. A total of four patients have been discharged from the hospital so far.

Vijayabaskar today said citizens need to follow four simple steps to avoid COVID-19. He mentioned social distancing, hand hygiene, surface hygiene, and respiratory hygiene as key measures to prevent the virus spread which killed over 30,000 people worldwide. "Educate everyone around you, let’s together fight this #pandemic & win over it," Vijayabaskar tweeted.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 1071. Death toll has risen to 29. Last week, Tamil Nadu reported its first casualty of coronavirus as a 54-year-old man died in Madurai. India is currently under a 21-day lockdown to mitigate the coronavirus spread.

Coming to the rescue of migrant workers stranded in the state owing to the lockdown due to COVID-19, the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday advised district collectors to ensure that the employees from other states get proper food and accommodation.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Palaniswami said medical officers were asked to lay special focus on 1.50 lakh pregnant women during the next two months. They were advised to call 102 and 104 for necessary assistance. All the private hospitals should send details of those individuals who suffer from chronic breathing problem to health department.
