From Ambani to Adani, who’s who of India Inc expected to break bread with Trump

Among ministers of Modi’s cabinet who could be present are Jaishankar, Pradhan and Goyal

    NEW DELHI : Industrialists Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, Anand Mahindra of the Mahindra Group, Arcelor Mittal’s Lakshmi N. Mittal, N. Chandrasekaran of Tata Sons and Gautam Adani of the Adani group could be some of the people sitting down for lunch with US President Donald Trump in New Delhi on Tuesday.

    Earlier on Tuesday, he will meet Narendra Modi for talks, after which the prime minister will host a lunch for the US president.

    The lunch could also have B.N. Kalyani of Bharat Forge, Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Airtel, Kumar Mangalam Birla of the Aditya Birla Group, Sanjiv Mehta of Hindustan Unilever, Salil Parekh of Infosys and Niranjan Hiranandani, who heads the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

    Rounding off the list could be Anil Agarwal of Vedanta, Sridhar Vembu of Zoho Corp, S.N. Subrahmanyan of Larsen and Toubro, Sanjay Mehrotra of Micron Technology and Debjani Ghosh, president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies, said a person who did not want to be named.

    Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Indian foreign ministry did not confirm or deny the guest list.

    Among ministers of Modi’s administration who could be present at the lunch are foreign minister S. Jaishankar, petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan, commerce minister Piyush Goyal, and minister of state for housing, urban development, commerce and civil aviation Hardeep Singh Puri.

    Puri, a former diplomat, is also Trump’s minister in waiting.

    P.K. Mishra, principal secretary to Modi, national security adviser Ajit Doval and chief of defence staff Bipin Rawat are some others expected to join Trump and his delegation.

    NITI Aayog head Amitabh Kant, foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India’s ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, commerce secretary Anup Wadhawan may be the other officials present.

    Some members of the media who could join the lunch include Shashi Shekhar of Hindustan, Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, Rahul Joshi of CNN-News18, Sanjay Gupta of Dainik Jagran and Uday Shankar of Star India, who is also vice-president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

    Trump’s official delegation includes Ken Juster, the US ambassador to India, commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, energy secretary Dan Brouillette, Mick Mulvaney, assistant to the president and acting chief of staff, national security adviser Robert O’Brien, Ivanka Trump, assistant to the president, and Jared Kushner, adviser to the president, assistant to the president and senior adviser to the president Stephen Miller, and Lindsay Reynolds, assistant to the president and chief of staff to the First Lady.

    Trump and his team will also attend a banquet hosted by President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday evening before the US president departs for home.
