The Delhi High court on Tuesday issued notice to Bar Council of India (BCI) and other Bar associations of Delhi on a plea filed by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India seeking clarification on the 3 November order passed by the court which had ordered for “no coercive action” against the advocates in connection to the FIRs registered against them with regard to the Tis Hazari incident. Centre has sought to clarify that the protection was extended only with respect to the FIRs which were registered on November 2 after the Tis Hazari violence and not the subsequent events. The court will now hear the matter tomorrow.
There was mayhem in the national capital on Tuesday, with thousands of Delhi police personnel protesting in uniform outside police headquarters following violent clashes between lawyers and police on Saturday. The protest comes in the wake of a studied silence by the police top brass after Saturday’s clashes.
The Delhi High Court on Sunday had ordered a judicial enquiry into the incident that took place at Tis Hazari court complex on Saturday. Retired high court judge SP Garg has been appointed to conduct the enquiry which has to be completed within six weeks.
A scuffle on parking space broke out between lawyers and some Delhi police personnel outside the district court. What began as a minor accident when two vehicles, one from either side, collided, turned into a violent clash with an advocate being allegedly shot at during the commotion. A police vehicle was also set on fire.
