Kiren Rijiju takes charge of earth sciences ministry

New Delhi: Union minister Kiren Rijiju officially assumed charge of the Ministry of Earth Sciences on Friday.
Addressing the media after assuming office, Rijiju highlighted the ministry’s pivotal role in realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He emphasized his priority to execute the Deep Ocean Mission, a flagship initiative of the prime minister aimed at exploring polymetallic nodules containing valuable minerals.
He said that each decision made by the ministry will be centered around the well-being of the common man.
Rijiju later presided over a concise presentation delivered by senior officials from the ministry, including the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and announced that in coming days, he will work out to re-calibrate the entire “Weather Forecast System".
The Ministry of Earth Sciences, responsible for formulating policies and implementing programs related to earth systems, oceans, and weather, plays a critical role in addressing environmental challenges and harnessing the potential of natural resources.
Rijiju was divested of the law and justice portfolio and assigned that of the earth sciences ministry on Thursday. Arjun Ram Meghwal was assigned the independent charge as minister of state in the ministry of law and justice in addition to his existing portfolios in place of Rijiju.
