Baghpat Stage Collapse: At least five people were killed and more than 50 were injured after a makeshift bamboo platform collapsed at a Jain religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat on Tuesday, reported NDTV.
Over 100 devotees had reached a temple during ‘Laddoo Mahotsav’ organised by the Jain community in Baraut city in Baghpat district. The management team had erected a temporary bamboo platform for devotees. The structure broke because of overcrowding, police told NDTV.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and issued directives to the local district authorities to provide immediate relief.
Soon after the accident, Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya met the victims of the Baghpat stage collapse, reported Hindustan Times.
So far, five deaths have been confirmed, and two more people are suspected to have died due to the accident.
After receiving information about the accident, ambulance and police officials rushed to the spot to rescue the devotees injured in the makeshift stage collapse, said Baghpat police chief Arpit Vijayvargiya.
Asmita Lal informed that several people sustained severe injuries due to the stage collapse incident in Baghpat. The accident occurred at around 7.15 am at CPU school in Baraut, he said.
The District Magistrate said those with minor wounds have been taken to the hospital and given first aid, and most of them have been sent home. Other devotees who sustained serious injuries are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The Baghpat stage collapse incident occurred during the celebration of ‘Laddoo Mahotsav’. The festival has been celebrated with huge fervour by the local Jain by the local Jain annually for the past three decades.
Huge panic and chaos erupted in the area after the incident, further aggravating the situation.
