  • Jagdeep Dhankar won by 346 votes; Opposition candidate Margaret Alva received 182 votes

Vice Presidential election 2022: NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday won the vice presidential election. Dhankhar secured 528 votes over Opposition candidate Margaret Alva's 182, Utpal Kumar Singh, Lok Sabha Secretary-General said. The counting of votes for the vice presidential election started on Saturday. As many as 725 Members of Parliament voted in the election. National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee and former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar (71) was pitted against joint Opposition candidate Margaret Alva (80).

Rahul Gandhi, Sonia congratulate Jagdeep Dhankhar on winning VP election

"Congratulations and best wishes to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar on his being elected Vice President of India," Sonia Gandhi said in a message.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also congratulated him.

"Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar ji on being elected as the 14th Vice President of India," he said on Twitter.

Jagdeep Dhankhar 2nd leader from Rajasthan to get elected vice-president

Jagdeep Dhankhar is the second leader from Rajasthan after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to get elected the vice-president of India.

Earlier, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat held the office as the 11th vice-president from August 2002 to July 2007.

Villages of both Shekhawat and Dhankhar are in Shekhawati region, which comprises Sikar, Jhunjhunu and nearby areas.

While Rajput leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, also a former chief minister of Rajasthan, was from Khachariyawas village in Sikar district, Dhankhar is from Jhunjhunu’s Kithana village.

Margaret Alva congratulates Jagdeep Dhankhar, but attacks betrayers

Opposition party candidate Margaret Alva congratulated Jagdeep Dhankhar on his victory. Alva wrote, "Congratulations to Mr Dhankhar on being elected Vice President! I would like to thank all the leaders of the Opposition, and MPs from across parties who voted for me in this election. Also, all the volunteers for their selfless service during our short but intense campaign".

However, Alva attacked MPs who cast their vote for NDA's Dhankhar. She wrote, "Unfortunately, some opposition parties chose to directly or indirectly support the BJP, in an attempt to derail the idea of a united opposition". She added, "It is my belief that by doing so, these parties and their leaders have damaged their own credibility".

Jagdeep Dhankhar- 10 facts about the new Vice President

  • Jagdeep Dhankhar began his political journey with the Janata Dal and won the Lok Sabha elections in 1989
  • He had a brief stint as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs under Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar.
  • Dhankhar joined BJP in 2008. BJP president J P Nadda described Dhankhar as a first-generation lawyer “fully equipped in administrative capacity". Dhankhar is also known to have warm ties with leaders across party lines. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said Dhankhar had excellent knowledge of the Constitution and was well-versed with legislative affairs.
  • He has championed issues related to Other Backward Classes, including the grant of OBC status to the Jat community in Rajasthan.
  • Dhankhar was also the Governor of West Bengal.
  • Dhankhar was born on May 18 May 1951 in Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. He did his primary schooling in his village Kithana and later joined the Sainik School, Chittorgarh, on a full scholarship.
  • After graduating from Sainik School, he joined the Maharaja's College, Jaipur in the B.Sc (Honours) Physics course, according to his biography on the West Bengal Raj Bhavan website.

Jagdeep Dhankhar defeated Margaret Alva by 346 votes

NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar was declared elected as the Vice President of India on Saturday after he bagged 528 votes against his rival candidate Margaret Alva's 182.

The returning officer of the vice presidential election said of the total 780 electors, 725 cast their ballots but 15 votes were found to be invalid.

The turnout was 92.94%. Of all the valid votes, Dhankhar secured 74.36%.

-Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of independent India, elected to the office in 1952.

-The only Vice President to be re-elected for a second term was Dr. S Radhakrishnan, who again became the Vice President in the year 1957.

-No Vice President, in the history of independent India, has had to face removal proceedings before the expiry of the term of office.

-K R Narayanan, Shankar Dayal Sharma, R Venkataraman, V V Giri, Zakir Hussain and Dr S Radhakrishnan, each of whom was a President of India at different points in time, remained Vice Presidents before they were elected as Presidents.

VP polls 2022: Why Jagdeep Dhankhar is likely to win?

All MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, are entitled to vote in the vice presidential election. The two Houses of Parliament together have a sanctioned strength of 788 MPs, of which there are eight vacancies in the Upper House.

With the ruling BJP having an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and 91 members in the Rajya Sabha as a result Dhankhar has a clear edge over his rival.

Duties of India's vice president

The office of the Vice President is the second highest constitutional post in independent India. The Vice President is the 'ex-officio' Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.

The office of the Vice President in India is complementary to that of the President, in that, the Vice President takes over the role of the President in the latter’s absence. In other words, the role of the Vice President is to assist the President in being the nominal head of the Republic of India.

Who is Margaret Alva-Opposition candidate

  • Margaret Alva is a four-time governor and former Union minister.
  • In August 2009, she became the first female Governor of Uttarakhand. later in 2012, she became the Governor of Rajasthan. Alva has also served as the governor of Goa and Gujarat for a brief period in 2014.
  • Alva joined politics under the guidance of then Karnataka chief minister Devaraj Urs, a close confidant of Indira Gandhi.
  • Alva has been known for her proximity to the Gandhi family.

India's Vice Presidential poll: Around 93% of MPs cast their votes

Around 93% polling was recorded in the vice presidential election on Saturday. Of the total 780 MPs, as many as 725 MPs voted till 5 pm. More than 50 MPs did not cast their vote.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his predecessor Manmohan Singh cast their ballots early in the day, while opposition leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi voted in the afternoon.

Who is Jadgeep Dhankhar?

  • The BJP-led NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar is a former West Bengal Governor. Dhankhar, a lawyer by profession, joined politics in 1989.
  • Dhankar was born in an agrarian household in a remote village in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district.
  • He was elected to Lok Sabha from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu in 1989.

How is India's Vice President elected?

The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

The voting is by secret ballot. The Electoral College to elect a person to the office of the Vice-President consists of all members of both Houses of Parliament.

Counting process underway for the Vice Presidential elections in Parliament starts

The counting started at 6 pm under the supervision of the Lok Sabha Secretary General, who is the returning officer for the election. The polling for India's 14 Vice Presidential poll started at 10 am on August 6.
