Weather Today Highlights: Delhi rain floods roads; Low-pressure system to intensify showers in West Bengal

The Coastal Police on Friday intensified the search for a young fisherman who went missing after a fishing boat capsized near Puthenthura here on July 31, PTI reported.

Delhi recorded its wettest first week of August since 2011, receiving 127 mm of rainfall during the first seven days of the month as relentless rain lashed the national capital through Friday.

Several weather stations recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall over the day, PTI reported.

Heavy rainfall left several major roads across Delhi submerged on Friday, triggering severe traffic congestion and disrupting daily life in many parts of the city.

Waterlogging was reported on key stretches including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Mahipalpur, Minto Road, ITO, Shakarpur and Chhatarpur. Long traffic jams left commuters stranded for hours, while many motorists were forced to abandon flooded roads. Office-goers also struggled to find cabs amid the widespread disruption.

Among the worst-hit locations was the Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road near Vayusena Bad (Air Force Station), where floodwater reportedly reached a depth of three to four feet. The inundation rendered one of south Delhi's busiest arterial roads virtually impassable, with residents saying the stretch had turned into a river.

Heavy rain brought large parts of the national capital to a standstill on Friday, submerging arterial roads under up to four feet of water, leaving vehicles stranded, choking traffic and inundating residential colonies as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert.

Delhi Fire Services (DFS) has received more than two dozen calls related to house collapses, portions of buildings giving way and fallen trees since midnight as heavy rain battered the national capital on Friday. However, no one was injured in these incidents.

According to the fire department, the calls were received between 12 am and 5.30 pm amid incessant rainfall across the city.

Even as Himachal Pradesh grapples with the closure of 162 roads and disruption of 73 water supply schemes and 105 transformers due to rain as of Friday evening, the Shimla Met Office has issued an 'orange' alert, warning of further heavy rain on August 10 and 11.

Heavy rainfall led to waterlogging at the premises of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Friday, causing inconvenience to patients and their attendants. Rainwater entered parts of the hospital, making it difficult for visitors to move around the premises, according to news agency ANI.

“We are facing a lot of difficulty. There is waterlogging in a lot of areas of the hospital premises. There is water in gallery as well. We are facing a lot of difficulty in moving the patient,” Arif Khan, an attendant of a patient told the news agency.

The flood situation in Assam remained critical as the toll rose to 97 with two more fatalities and over 1.68 lakh people across 15 districts were still affected by the deluge, PTI reported.

The Shimla Met office on Friday issued an 'orange alert' of heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh for Monday and Tuesday (August 10 and 11).

As many as 145 roads have been closed in the state following heavy rains, while 14 water supply schemes and 224 transformers were disrupted as of Friday morning, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall across Odisha on Friday.

A low-pressure area is likely to be formed over the coastal areas of West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday morning, bringing heavy to very heavy rain in some southern districts, the IMD said.

The southwest monsoon has become active again over Rajasthan, bringing heavy rainfall to several parts of the state, including the capital city, the Meteorological Department said on Friday, warning of more intense showers in the coming days.

Several parts of the country recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am IST on Friday, August 7, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“Very heavy rainfall observed at isolated places over Odisha , Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra and heavy rainfall over Assam & Meghalaya Nagaland, Manipur,Mizoram & Tripura, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh , West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh ,Konkan & Goa,” the weather agency said.
