Cyclone Biparjoy: Monsoon has arrived in Kerala after a week's delay, says IMD

The India Meteorological Department declared the monsoon onset over Kerala on June 8, a week later than usual, with the southwest monsoon advancing into other areas. The onset was delayed by Cyclone 'Biparjoy'.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared the monsoon onset over Kerala on Thursday, a week later than it normally does. “The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala today, June 8," the weather office said in an official statement.

“The monsoon has advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal today," the statement read.

The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. In mid-May, the IMD said the monsoon might arrive in Kerala by June 4.

Earlier, meteorologists said Cyclone 'Biparjoy' had been impacting the intensity of the monsoon and that its onset over Kerala would be “mild", PTI reported.

Skymet had predicted the monsoon onset over Kerala on June 7, with an error margin of three days.

The Biparjoy is anticipated to move nearly northwards during the next 24 hours and intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. It would then move north-north-westwards during the subsequent three days, according to the latest bulletin issued by India Meteorological Department.

“The onset of Southwest monsoon is already delayed by six days and due to the development of the cyclonic storm, the arrival of monsoon over the Kerala coast could be delayed by another two-three days," Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Meteorology And climate Change at Skymet told Mint.

“Once the monsoon sets in over Kerala, the progress of it is seen to be slow over south peninsular and central India. The monsoon current may develop, and monsoon may intensify over the central Arabian Sea by 12 June," Palawat said.

“The monsoon is seen to be weak in the southern peninsular and central regions of the country due to the development of cyclonic storm Biparjoy. Hence, the monsoon is not seen as promising," he added.

Delayed and feeble monsoon will likely cause —20% of the long-period average (LPA) rainfall in June, the meteorologist at Skymet informed.
