The newly constructed Parliament building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this week. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met PM Modi last Thursday inviting him to inaugurate the New Parliament Building.

A Lok Sabha release said that construction of the New Parliament Building in the national capital has been completed and it symbolises the spirit of self-reliant India.

"The lack of space was being experienced in the current building as per the present requirements. In both the Houses, there was also a lack of convenient arrangements for the sitting of the MPs which was affecting the efficiency of the work of the members," the release said.

The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927 which is now going to be almost 100 years old.

When the New Parliament Building will be inaugurated?

PM Modi is set to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28. The invitation accessed by ANI has been sent to various dignitaries including members of Parliament by the Lok Sabha secretary general Utpal Kumar Singh. The event will begin at 12 pm (noon).

The date coincides with the birth anniversary of Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar.

Why the opposition parties are objecting to the inauguration?

Several opposition parties including Congress, AAP, TMC, CPI are objecting to the inauguration.

Considering the inauguration coincides with the birth anniversary of Savarkar, the Congress called it a "complete insult" to the country's founding fathers.

The opposition led by the Congress party has also questioned the government over the Prime Minister inaugurating the new Parliament building and accused the BJP-led central government of insulting the top constitutional post of the country by not asking President of India Droupadi Murmu or Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for the inauguration.

Some opposition parties also asked why would the prime minister, who is the head of the executive and not the legislature, inaugurate it.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, "A complete insult to all our Founding Fathers and Mothers. A total rejection of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose, et al. A blatant repudiation of Dr. Ambedkar."

He was responding to a tweet by TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, who tweeted, "26 November 2023- Indian Constitution which gifted parliamentary democracy to the nation shall step into 75th year which would've been befitting for inauguration of new Sansad Bhawan. But it shall be done on 28 May, birthday of Savarkar- How much relevant?"
