Renowned architect Bimal Hasmukh Patel, aged 64, has been credited with the design of the recently inaugurated triangular Parliament building. Born on August 31, 1961, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Patel is an accomplished professional in the field of architecture, urban planning, and academia.

As per media reports, he played a pivotal role in the design of the new Parliament structure as a part of the Central Vista Project.

Patel is a pioneering architect based in Gujarat, India. He is the founder of HCP Design Planning and Management Private Limited, a firm specializing in architecture, planning, and project management. Patel's notable achievements include leading the Central Vista revamp project, designing the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, and spearheading the innovative Sabarmati Riverfront project.

Project architect Bimal Patel said in an interview with The Indian Express in 2020 that the revamp would "respect history".

His passion for architecture stems from his father, Hasmukh Chandulal Patel, who established the HCP firm in 1960. Patel obtained his architectural education at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) in Ahmedabad, graduating in 1984.

Bimal Hasmukh Patel, an esteemed architect with over 30 years of experience, is highly regarded for his expertise in urban planning and design. In addition to his leadership role at HCP Design Planning and Management Private Limited, Patel holds the position of president at CEPT University in Ahmedabad, formerly known as the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology.

His remarkable contributions to the field have earned him several accolades, including the esteemed Padma Shri award in 2019, which is one of India's highest civilian honours presented by the President.

Patel and his company have also made architectural contributions to notable structures nationwide, such as the Aga Khan Academy in Hyderabad, Amul Dairy in Mumbai, Container Terminal in Chennai, and the architectural design of IIT Jodhpur, among others.

The Union Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, has stated that Patel's firm will receive 229.75 crore for consultancy services, encompassing the preparation of the project's master plan, design, landscaping, cost estimation, and integration of traffic and parking facilities.

Bimal Patel, when questioned about the triangular shape chosen for the new Parliament building, explained that it was primarily influenced by the triangular plot of land on which the building is situated.

Additionally, he highlighted the presence of three main spaces within the building: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and a Central Lounge. Patel also emphasized the significance of triangles in sacred geometries found in various religions and cultures across India. He mentioned examples such as the Sri Yantra and the concept of Trinities in different belief systems, underlining the sacred symbolism associated with triangles.
