A 37-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his wife and mother-in-law in Bengaluru last week, police said on Monday. The accused suspected Loknath Singh, a real-estate businessman, had multiple extramarital affairs and illegal business dealings, the police said.
Police have arrested the two accused.
According to the police, the incident came to light when Singh's body was found by people in an abandoned car in a deserted area in Chikkabanavara on Saturday, March 22.
Police said that a preliminary probe into the crime revealed the accused initially spiked the man's food with sleeping pills to make him drowsy and then drove him to a secluded spot where they slit his throat with a knife before fleeing.
A distress call was received at 5.30 pm on Saturday, informing the police about the body.
"We had received a distress call on 112 at 5.30 pm on Saturday, informing us about the body. We have arrested his wife and mother-in-law for the crime. Further investigation is underway," an NDTV report quoted North Bangalore Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saidul Adavath as saying.
According to the police, the murder may be linked to the victim's alleged multiple extramarital affairs and illegal business activities.
According to police, Singh had been in a relationship with the woman for two years before the couple registered their marriage in Kunigal in December last year. Although his family opposed the relationship due to an age gap, neither side was aware of the marriage.
However, soon after her marriage, she grew suspicious of her husband and discovered that he was having an affair, officers said.
It was only two weeks ago that the woman's family discovered she was married to Singh after he left her at her parents' house. At the same time, Singh's wife and in-laws learned of his alleged extramarital affairs and involvement in illegal business dealings, police said.
The relationship further deteriorated, with the couple even considering divorce. However, things took an ugly turn when Singh allegedly began threatening his in-laws and warning them of severe consequences. Cops said this led his wife and mother-in-law to plot his murder.
Police also revealed that Singh was under investigation by the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch in connection with a fraud case.
