Prime Minister Modi while speaking on the occasion of World Environment Day said that India considers the environment like any other area for the country's growth. He also said that India has a clear roadmap to protect the environment and climate change while balancing the needs of the present and the future.
Focusing specifically on the theme of World Environment Day 2023, #BeatPlasticPollution, he said, “The theme of this year's World Environment Day is to get rid of single-use plastic, an issue about which the world is talking today but India has been working on it consistently for the last four-five years.”
"In 2018 itself, India started working at two levels for getting rid of single-use plastic. On one hand, we banned single-use plastic and on the other hand we made the plastic waste processing mandatory," he added
The Prime Minister also informed that while India has been focusing on expanding the coverage of 4G and 5G networks, there has also been a similar focus on increasing the forest cover in the country.
Prime Minister Modi emphasised that while India is helping the poor, it is also thinking about the fuel needs of the future. He proclaimed that the country has increased its focus on 'green and clean energy' in the last nine years.
Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu also asked the people of the country to adopt an eco-friendly approach and work together to build a green future. She wrote on Twitter, “On this World Environment Day, let us remind ourselves that we are the children of Mother Earth. It is our time to give back to the Nature which always caters to our needs and demands. Let's re-dedicate ourselves to adopt an eco-friendly approach in our day-to-day activities and gift a clean, biodiversity rich and beautiful planet for the posterity. Let's together build a green future!,”
World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5 since 1973. The occasion acts as a reminder to come together and protect the environment from irreparable harm.
