World Health Organization estimates that hypertension is one of the major causes of premature deaths worldwide. Shockingly, 46% of the people who have hypertension are unaware of the condition.
World Hypertension Day was first observed on May 14, 2005. It was introduced by the World Hypertension League, an umbrella organization of 85 countries that seek to raise awareness around the issue of hypertension. From 2006 onwards, World Hypertension Day has been celebrated on May 17 every year.
As per World Health Organization estimates, Hypertension affects more than a billion people worldwide and leads to the death of around 7.5 million people each year. Many people don't notice the symptoms of Hypertension due to a lack of knowledge about hypertension. World Hypertension Day seeks to raise awareness about the prevalence of hypertension, its symptoms and the preventive measures that can be taken. WHD also emphasizes the significance of adopting a healthy lifestyle in combating the issue of hypertension. Diagnosis of high blood pressure at an early stage can help in saving many lives.
The theme of World Hypertension Day changes every year. The theme for this year is ‘Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer’.

WHO says that people with hypertension may not feel any symptoms at all and the only way to know about the condition is to get your blood pressure checked regularly. However, people with very high blood pressure can feel symptoms like severe headaches, chest pain, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision or other vision changes, anxiety,confusion, buzzing in the ears, nosebleeds and abnormal heart rhythm.
