Amid growing cases of cancer across the world, smoking causes 30 per cent of all cancer-related deaths and makes up 80 per cent of lung cancer deaths. It also increases the risk of more than 12 types of cancers in humans. Despite a range of harmful effects on the body, smoking is highly prevalent due to its ability to trick the brain into happiness. To take people out of this decisive trap of happiness, World Health Organisation celebrates Anti-Tobacco Day, also known as World No Tobacco Day, on May 31 every year.
The day is celebrated to aware people of the health risks associated with tobacco use, which includes smoking and smokeless tobacco products. It encourages people to quit tobacco and governments, and organisations to take action against tobacco use.
Every year, the day is celebrated on May 31. The day was first celebrated on May 31, 1987, to draw the world's attention to the tobacco epidemic and deaths caused due to its consumption.
7 April,1987 was selected as ‘world no-smoking day’ after the World Health Assembly passed resolution WHA40.38, in 1987. Next year, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, demanding the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on May 31.
This year, the celebration will revolve around raising awareness among the global citizens. It will also include raising awareness about the business practices of tobacco companies.
This year's theme for the World No Tobacco Day is ‘We need food, not tobacco.’ The WHO and other public health organisations across the world will come together to celebrate the day on Wednesday giving a message on similar lines.
Across the world, people, NGOs, social groups, students, and governments organise campaigns and events to promote tobacco control. These initiatives include public awareness campaigns, educational programs in schools and communities, health screenings, and policy advocacy. The day is a major reminder of the devastating impact of tobacco on individuals, families, and societies.
If you are indulging in tobacco consumption, take a resolution to cut down its consumption in a gradual manner. Set daily and monthly targets, which are achievable, and stick with them. You can take the help of your close friends and family members. You can also help your loved ones by indulging in a healthy conversation around their addiction and encouraging them to cut down on its consumption.
