Former skipper of the Indian cricket team, Anil Kumble on Tuesday expressed dismay over how the wrestlers were 'manhandled' on 28 May. Anil Kumble joins other big sportspersons like Neeraj Chopra, Abhinav Bindra, Sunil Chhetri, etc. who have voiced their support for wrestlers and expressed disappointment over how they were treated on the day India celebrated its new Parliament.

“Dismayed to hear about what transpired on the 28th of May with our wrestlers being manhandled. Anything can be resolved through proper dialogue. Hoping for a resolution at the earliest," Anil Kumble said in a tweet.

The development came as the protesting wrestlers reached Haridwar on Tuesday to immerse their hard-earned medals into the river Ganga.

"These medals are our life and soul. We are going to throw them in the Ganges. After that there is no point in living, so we will sit on a hunger strike until death at India Gate," Olympic medal-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik said in a statement on Tuesday.

The wrestlers were protesting for more than a month at Jantar Mantar in Delhi demanding action against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in the case of alleged sexual harassment against female wrestlers including minors.

On 28 May, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government decided to inaugurate the new Parliament building of India, protesting wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia led a women ‘Mahapanchayat’ towards the new Parliament building. But, the protestors were stopped by the Delhi Police and they were detained for violating the law and order in the capital city.

Delhi Police has also cleared the protest area at Jantar Mantar and said that wrestlers are not allowed to continue their protest at the site anymore.

BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh continues to plead innocence and claims that the protests are a big conspiracy against him.
