'Last night was sleepless, its high time we..', Abhinav Bindra comes in support of protesting wrestlers

India's decorated Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra is another name in the list of sportsperson who are showing their support for the protesting wrestlers. On Sunday, protesting wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat were detained

Denouncing the Delhi police action against the India's top wrestlers at Jantar Mantar on Monday, India's first individual Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra said that he was “haunted by the horrifying images of fellow Indian wrestlers protesting." He also suggested that it is the high-time to establish independent safeguarding measures across sporting organisations.

“Last night was sleepless, haunted by the horrifying images of my fellow Indian wrestlers protesting. It's high time we establish independent safeguarding measures across sporting organizations. We must ensure that if such situations arise, they are dealt with utmost sensitivity and respect. Every athlete deserves a safe and empowering environment," tweeted Abhinav Bindra on Monday.

Other than Abhinav Bindra, several other sports players like footballer Sunil Chhetri, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, and Neeaj Chopra too criticised the action against the wrestlers.

"Why does it have to come down to our wrestlers being dragged around without any consideration? This isn't the way to treat anyone. I really hope this whole situation is assessed the way it should be," said India football captain Chhetri.

Pathan said a solution to the issue should be found immediately.

"I'm so sad to see the visuals of our Athletes…. Please solve this ASAP," Pathan tweeted.

Several images from Sunday's face off between the protesting wrestlers and the Delhi Police have shown the mishandling the police personnel of India's top wrestlers. The police was dragging Olympic and world championship medallists including Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat. The tussle between the protestors and the police went uglier when their supporters breached the security cordon ahead of their march towards the new Parliament building for the planned women's 'Mahapanchayat'.

It is worth noting that the wrestlers are demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing serious sexual harrasment allegations including one under POCSO act. The protestors had called for a women's Mahapanchayat at the new Parliament building at a time when it was being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Sunday, the wrestlers were detained by the Delhi police when they were trying to breach the barricades and march towards the new Parliament building from Jantar Mantar. The police personnel shoved and pushed them before detaining them at different police stations.

The videos of the Phogat sisters trying hard to save themselves from the detention have taken the internet by storm. Vinesh Phogat provided a strong resistance against her detention and Sangeeta Phogat clung on to her cousing while lying on the road. In the tussle, the police officials dragged and lifted them into buses. Later, many of them were released after seven hours of detention.
