
Jammu and Kashmir floods: As of Tuesday, 22 July 2025, Jammu and Kashmir continues to face severe monsoon conditions, with heavy rainfall since 20 July causing widespread disruption. Flood-like conditions have emerged in Rajouri after a sharp rise in water levels in the Dharhali and Saktoh rivers, prompting precautionary school closures. The region is also grappling with landslides, including a tragic incident in Poonch district in which one student died and several others were injured.
In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, two people were killed on Monday in a rain-triggered landslide in Chamba district after a boulder crashed onto a house during heavy rainfall.
Intense monsoon showers have lashed most parts of Jammu and Kashmir since 20 July. The Jammu plains received heavy rain on 21 July morning, and widespread rainfall is expected on 22 July across the region.
The Meteorological Department has issued repeated warnings about the heightened risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, especially along vulnerable hilly routes like the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Multiple districts, including Jammu, Rajouri, Kathua, Samba, Reasi, and Kashmir Valley towns such as Srinagar and Anantnag, are under red and orange alerts for heavy rainfall and associated flood threats.
Landslides and road blockages noted on key routes like the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway have caused difficulties for commuters and emergency responders.
Landslides and torrential rains wreaked havoc in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, leaving four people, including a 5-year-old, dead and several injured on Monday.
In the Reasi district of J-K, a 70-year-old pilgrim was killed and nine others were injured when a massive landslide struck the old track to the Vaishno Devi shrine.
The Dharhali and Saktoh rivers in Rajouri district have seen significant rises in water levels due to incessant rainfall. This has created a flood-like situation and caused waterlogging in low-lying areas.
As a precaution, the Rajouri District Administration has ordered the closure of all government and private schools in the district for 22 July.
A landslide struck Bainch Kalsan in Poonch on Monday, resulting in the death of one student and injuries to 23 others, including a teacher. Two injured students remain in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Poonch.
Rainfall is expected to persist through 23 July, with a gradual improvement from 24 July onwards when showers will likely become isolated and less intense.
In Himachal Pradesh, a newly married couple in Chamba district was killed after a boulder fell on top of a house in Sutanh village.
Normal life was disrupted as heavy rainfall triggered landslides, blocked 401 roads, and forced the closure of educational institutions.
The state's meteorological department has issued a 'red' alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in five of the 12 districts of the state, including Shimla, Kangra, Chamba, Sirmaur, and Mandi.
