Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was questioned for nearly nine hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday, April 16, as a witness in the alleged excise policy scam case. The AAP chief claimed that the allegations of the scam were false and the agency was acting at the BJP's behest.

After leaving the CBI headquarters at 8.30 pm, Kejriwal told media persons that he was asked about 56 questions during the interrogation. “I answered them all...as I said earlier we have nothing to hide. The alleged liquor scam is false, fabricated, and motivated by dirty politics... We will die but not give up honesty."

The central probe agency had summoned Kejriwal on Friday last seeking his appearance as a witness before the investigation team.

A CBI spokesperson after the questioning said that Kejriwal's statement will be verified and collated with the available evidence. “The Chief Minister of Delhi was issued a notice under section 160 CrPC for his examination in this case on April 16, 2023 and answering various questions related to the case. He joined the investigation today and his statement has been recorded under section 161 CrPC," he said.

Shortly after being detained by Delhi Police for protesting near the CBI office, Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha on Sunday said the party which was carved out of the anti-corruption movement has seen all kinds of struggle and is not scared of CBI, ED or police detention.

"We want to give the BJP a message that our party was carved out of the anti-corruption movement and has seen all kinds of struggle. We aren't scared of CBI, ED or police detention. BJP suffers from Kejriwal phobia. It is because of Kejriwal's fear that the BJP has come down to such an act. We have not been told our crime or the IPC regulation that we have broken," said Raghav Chadha while talking to ANI.

Protest against CBI summons to Kejriwal, AAP senior leaders detained by Delhi Police released

Several senior AAP leaders detained by the Delhi Police while they were staging a sit-in on Sunday against the CBI summoning Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case were released in the evening, officials said.

About 1,350 people, including AAP leaders, who were detained have been released, the police said.

The detainees included Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha, Delhi ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi and Kailash Gahlot, AAP spokesperson Adil Ahmad Khan, its general secretary Pankaj Gupta and some ministers in the Punjab government.

While being released from the police station, the AAP leaders raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What CBI asked Arvind Kejriwal during questioning?

When asked about the questions that were asked from him during the questioning, he said that it covered everything from the framing of the policy to the end of it.

"They asked everything including why we started the policy and how we did it. They asked me nearly 56 questions starting from 2020 till the end," he said.

The Chief Minister added that he has not been summoned again.

"They have not indicated that they will call me once again. They don't have an inch of evidence to prove that the AAP government has done anything wrong," Kejriwal said.

‘Don’t support Kejriwal', says Cong's Ajay Maken

Former Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken has asked the party not to "support" and "show any sympathy" to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Delhi liquor policy case, as it would "confuse" the party cadre and "benefit" the BJP.

He also appealed to the lawyers and senior working committee members to refrain from representing Kejriwal or his government in court.

"I appeal to capable advocates and senior working committee members, now steering committee members, to please refrain from representing Kejriwal or his government in court. While it is within their professional realm to represent anyone, doing so for Kejriwal's government and associates sends the wrong message to our cadres and confuses them", Maken said.

"It ultimately benefits the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by dividing Congress Party votes," Maken added in his tweet.

The CBI has recorded the statements of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Excise policy Scam case and said that it will be verified and collated with the "available evidence".

According to a statement by the CBI, the Chief Minister of Delhi, was issued a notice under section 160 Cr.P.C for his examination in this case on 16.04.2023 and answering various questions related to the case. He joined the investigation today and his statement has been recorded u/s. 161 Cr.P.C.

"The statement will be verified and collated with the available evidence," the statement said.

After leaving the CBI office, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal sarcastically hinted that the BJP-ruled Central government tried to destroy AAP. He said “They want to finish AAP because they cannot build schools, hospitals as AAP has done in Delhi, Punjab."

“CBI asked around 56 questions regarding excise policy, I answered them all. Liquor scam case is fake, result of dirty politics" the CM added. 

“Want to thank CBI officials for hospitality, they asked questions in friendly, harmonious manner" the CM further stated. 

"The CBI asked around 56 questions regarding the excise policy, including when and why the policy was started," he added.

BJP leaders protest at Rajghat over AAP's 'insult' to Mahatma Gandhi

Several BJP leaders in national capital Delhi on Sunday staged a sit-in at Rajghat over alleged insult to Mahatma Gandhi by the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party.

AAP protests emerge in Amritsar

The Aam Aadmi Party held a protest in Amritsar on Sunday against the BJP-led Centre against the summoning of Delhi Chief Minister and party's convenor Arvind Kejriwal by the CBI in the excise policy case.

The protest was held at the Bhandari bridge and it was joined by state ministers including Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Inderbir Singh Nijjar, MLAs Jeevan Jyot Kaur, Ajay Gupta and Jasbir Singh Sandhu along with their supporters.

Several senior AAP leaders were on Sunday "detained" by the Delhi Police while they were staging a sit-in to protest against the summoning of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the CBI in connection with the excise policy case.

The detainees included Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi, Kailash Gahlot, Adil Ahmad Khan, Pankaj Gupta and some ministers in the Punjab government.

AAP MP Raghav Chadha called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Lord Krishna and compared BJP to the fictional evil character Kansa.

Punjab ministers, MLAs stopped from entering Delhi, claims AAP

Punjab AAP MLAs and ministers have claimed that they have been stoppped from entering national capital Delhi. The party's leaders from Punjab were headed for Delhi in a show support to Chief Minister Kejriwal, who was summoned by the federal agency to its office in the national capital in connection with irregularities in formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy.

"We cannot even enter our capital? @DelhiPolice not allowing my car to enter Delhi," Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains said in a tweet.

The ruling party in Punjab claimed that ministers Bram Shanker Jimpa, Dr Balbir Singh and Harjot Singh Bains, and MLAs Dinesh Chadha and Kuljit Randhawa were among those stopped at the Singhu border and not allowed to enter Delhi.

Kapil Sibal calls Kejriwal's summon by CBI 'politically motivated'

As Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal arrived at the CBI office in the national capital on Sunday for questioning in connection with the excise policy case, Rajya Sabha MP and former Congress leader Kapil Sibal termed the summons by the premier investigating agency as "politically motivated".

Sibal said, "There is no doubt this (CBI summons to Kejriwal) is politically motivated".

"Why would you keep Sisodia in jail for so long? Why would you keep Jain in jail for so long? For what purpose? What purpose are they serving?" questioned Sibal, also a senior advocate.

"They (CBI) said kickbacks worth 100 crore were received. Can they name one public servant to whom the bribe was paid? Not one. What are they keeping him in for?" he said.

"Why aren't the courts granting him (Sisodia) bail? I think it is unfortunate that the whole system has collapsed," Sibal said.

AAP used activist Anna Hazare to capture power: Kiren Rijiju

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party used activist Anna Hazare to capture power in the name of corruption.

Rijiju also shared portions of an undated interview of Hazare in which the activist purportedly sounded critical of the Delhi excise policy.

"Now they have captured power I am sure they will not even listen to Annaji. Corruption was an excuse to fool Annaji and the people.

"Anna ji was used only to capture Power and to loot the resources in the name of corruption," the Union minister wrote in English and Hindi on Twitter.

Amid Sec 144, AAP leaders sit outside CBI HQs in Delhi

From Bhagwant Mann to Raghav Chaddha, several Aam Aadmi Party leaders were sitting outside the CBI headquarters. At present, Kejriwal is inside the CBI office where he is being questioned, in a case related to Delhi liquor policy. Notably, the Delhi Police clamped Section 144 of the CrPC (Curfew) around CBI headquarters, but AAP leaders have said they would wait for their leader and leave the place once the interrogation of Kejriwal ends.

'Agency investigates on merit,' CBI official

As AAP ministers and supporters slammed CBI, calling the probe agency the puppet of the central government, a senior official has said, "We investigate the matter on merits".

Kejriwal on Sunday said that the central agency will arrest him if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has given the orders.

Section 144 imposed near CBI HQ in Delhi

To prevent untoward incidents, the Delhi Police has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC Act near CBI HQ and Central Delhi.

CBI line of questioning for Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal has been taken to the first floor office of the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI, which is probing the liquor policy case.

The CBI may ask the Kejriwal about the policy formulation process, especially the "untraceable" file, which was earlier slated to be put before the Council of Ministers.

The agency may also quiz Kejriwal on the statements of other accused, where they have indicated the manner in which policy was allegedly influenced to favour some liquor businessmen and the South liquor lobby.

In addition, the CBI agency might also seek his role in formulating the excise policy and his knowledge about the alleged influence being cast by the traders and South lobby members.

Kejriwal may also be asked if he was involved in the formulation of the policy before it was given approval.
