Monsoon tracker: Monsoon misses onset date in Kerala; heatwave conditions likely in these states till 8 June
Monsoon tracker: The monsoon onset is delayed by 3-4 days in Kerala, according to IMD, due to favourable conditions not yet being met. Light rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in various regions, with heat waves continuing in some states.

Monsoon tracker: The monsoon missed its onset date in Kerala on Sunday with the India Meteorological Department anticipating a further delay of three to four days. The southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. Earlier in May, IMD had said monsoon might arrive in Kerala by June 4.
In a latest statement, the IMD said, “Conditions (are) becoming favourable with the increase in westerly winds over the south Arabian Sea. Also, the depth of westerly winds is gradually increasing and today, June 4, the depth of westerlies has reached up to 2.1 kilometres above the mean sea level. The cloud mass over the southeast Arabian sea is also increasing. We expect that these favourable conditions for monsoon onset over Kerala will further improve during the next three-four days."
Speaking of today's predictions, IMD has predicted generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle in Delhi for Monday with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 35 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. On Sunday too, some parts of the national capital witnessed light rains.
Light rainfall over western Himalayan region during next four to five days
IMD predicted light rainfall over the western Himalayan region during the next four to five days. According to the weather department, due to a Western disturbance over Iran, light rainfall activity is expected over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi NCR for the next two days. Dr Naresh Kumar, Senior scientist, IMD-Delhi said, “Light rainfall activity is expected over the western Himalayan region over the next 4-5 days due to a Western disturbance over Iran. Very light rainfall is expected over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP and Delhi NCR in the next two days. After this temperature is expected to rise."
Rainfall predictions in other states
-As per IMD, light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Kerala, Lakshadweep, South Interior Karnataka and isolated to scattered activity over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during next 5 days.
-The weather office has also predicted heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 4th and 5th June.
Heatwave predicted in these states
-IMD has also predited heat wave conditions likely to continue over Bihar, northeast Jharkhand and West Bengal and Sikkim during till 8 June.
-Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions very likely to continue in some pockets over Bihar during 4-8 June.
-As per IMD, heat wave conditions is very likely to continue in isolated pockets over West Bengal & Sikkim and Northeast Jharkhand during 4-8 June; over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on 4 and 5 June; over Telangana during 4-6 June; over Vidarbha during 6-8 June and over East Uttar Pradesh 7 and 8 June.
