Mumbai Airport News: In a deeply distressing incident, the body of a stillborn male infant was reportedly found discarded in a waste bin inside a toilet at Mumbai's Terminal 2 (T2) International Airport on Tuesday evening. The grim finding was made by housekeeping staff during their routine cleaning at approximately 10:30 pm, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.
Times of India quoted Sahar Police stating that this unfortunate event marks the first recorded instance of body disposal within the airport premises.
The individual responsible for abandoning the infant managed to escape undetected, raising concerns about potential security lapses at the Mumbai Airport.
Authorities are now meticulously gathering information on all Mumbai airport visitors, including both arriving and departing passengers, in an effort to identify any pregnant woman who may have suffered a miscarriage.
The deceased infant was promptly transported to Cooper Hospital, where medical staff confirmed that the baby was indeed stillborn prior to admission.
Sahar police has registered a case under sections 91 and 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which address acts intended to prevent live birth or cause death after birth, as well as the concealment of birth through secret disposal of a body.
A senior officer from the Sahar Police Station described the incident as unprecedented at Mumbai Airport, highlighting the urgency of identifying the individual responsible for abandoning the stillborn infant.
"A team is meticulously reviewing CCTV footage to identify the person who discarded the stillborn. We are also tracing the suspect's movements to determine whether they entered and exited the airport with the stillborn or if a miscarriage occurred unnoticed. This appears to be a significant security lapse, as the person was able to dispose of the infant undetected and leave the airport without arousing suspicion," the officer explained to Times of India.
The fact that the individual responsible for abandoning the infant was able to do so without detection has raised significant security concerns for Mumbai Airport. The airport, known for its stringent security measures, faces questions about how such an incident could occur.
The police are considering the possibility of unauthorized entry, which, if confirmed, would highlight a serious breach in airport security protocols.
"The stillborn baby was found in the trash during restroom cleaning. The staff immediately alerted CISF security personnel, who then informed the police. We are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the time of death and whether the baby was already stillborn when abandoned," police tol ToI.
