National creativity day was founded by Hal Croasmun, film producer and president of the company ScreenwritingU in 2018 for the purpose of bringing attention to and showing appreciation for the people in the world who are makers. Since then, May 30th has been established as the day for the annual celebration of creativity.
In the last decade, the skill of creativity has found its way into all sectors such as tech, software, management and sits side by side with technical skill in terms of its importance.
People have different opinions about creativity and when it originated. Some believe it began with the invention of the boomerang by the Australian Aborigines. Others believe the first signs to have come up in Egypt with the creation of pyramids, geometry and astronomy. The term ‘creativity’ itself has evolved over the years. The ancient Greeks preferred to avoid freedom of action in favour of following the rules when it came to Art. The term art was exclusively applied to poetry. After Greek civilization, the Romans developed new vocabulary, literature and most significantly, sculptures.
The concept of "creativity" was redefined by mediaeval Christianity. The medieval church claimed that the phrase "creatio ex nihilo" (Latin for "creation from nothing") described God's act of creation, claiming that ‘creatio’ does not apply to human activities and therefore, creativity gained a negative perception.
The first time the word creativity was used was in the 17th Century by Polish poet Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, but only in regards to poetry. It was only in the 19th Century, when religious skepticism was on the rise, that people began to recognize not only art but creativity itself which made it possible for the ability of creativity to stand alone and not just be related to art.
The Renaissance is often cited as the era of greatest creativity in history because it allowed everyone to express themselves and saw a blossoming of creativity in all spheres of life, including politics, the economy, society, art, philosophy, science, and education. Today, all industries and all aspects of life recognize and require creativity and its importance from the keypad of your laptop to the building you call home. May 30 is a celebration of the people who make it possible and the skill they hone.
