Odisha train accident: Here are top 10 updates you need to know

261 people have died and rescue operations have been completed following a train crash in Odisha involving three trains. Prime Minister Modi has chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation and is scheduled to visit the site of the accident and Cuttack hospital.

The death toll in the disastrous railway accident in Odisha has now risen to 261 and rescue operations at the site have been completed, a South Eastern Railway official said. The train crash, one of the deadliest in the country, took place in Balasore district about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar around 7 pm on Friday, prompting the Railway Ministry to order a probe. Three trains - the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train were involved in the accident.

1) Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation in relation to the tragic train accident in Odisha. Home Minister Amit Shah and senior government officials also attended the meeting as Modi took stock of the situation. 

2) The prime minister is also scheduled to visit the site of the accident and also the Cuttack hospital where the injured are being treated. Since morning, Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnav, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, Dharmendra Pradhan. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also left for Balasore. Udhayanidhi Stalin, Siva Shankar, and Anbil Mahesh also left to meet for Odisha to enquire for details in Odisha train accident.

3) The railways has initiated a high-level probe into the train crash in Odisha, which will be headed by the commissioner of railway safety, South Eastern Circle. Earlier in the day, Railway Minister

4) Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in an updates said that two teams of doctors from AIIMS Bhubaneswar have been dispatched for Balasore & Cuttack to assist in relief operations at the rail accident site in Odisha.

5) A special train carrying stranded passengers from Odisha's Balasore arrived at Howrah railway station in West Bengal today.

6) Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin announced 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased from Tamil Nadu and 1 lakh each to the injured will be given by Tamil Nadu Govt. Additional officers have been appointed to carry out rescue and relief work. DMK also made an announcement regarding the cancellation of all scheduled events in the state on June 3, which were planned to celebrate the birth centenary of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

7) Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the rescue operation has been completed and restoration work has started. We will thoroughly investigate this incident and will ensure such incidents don't happen in future.

8) The Congress on Saturday said the "horrendous" train accident in Odisha reinforces why safety should always be the foremost priority in the functioning of the rail network and asserted that there are many legitimate questions that need to be raised. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary said in a tweet that the train accident in Odisha is truly horrendous and is a matter of the greatest anguish. "It reinforces why SAFETY should always be the foremost priority in the functioning of the rail network. There are many legitimate questions that need to be raised but that should wait till tomorrow," Ramesh tweeted. Earlier TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale in a tweet wrote, "Stunned & distressed to hear the tragic news of the Coromandel Express & Yashwantpur-Howrah train crash in Odisha. My fervent prayers for those affected & their families. ...That an alleged signalling failure led to 3 trains crashing is shocking beyond belief. There are serious questions which need answering."

9) The Indian Army was deployed to assist in the evacuation and treatment of injured in the horrific train accident.

10) The highly anticipated inauguration ceremony of the Goa-Mumbai Vande Bharat Express, scheduled for Saturday, has been cancelled following a tragic train mishap in Odisha's Balasore on June 2, 2023, as confirmed by Konkan railway official. Later confirmed by Konkan Railway in a tweet.
