NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate nine medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, giving healthcare a major boost in the state.

Modi will launch the Pradhan Mantri Atmanirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojana (PMASBY) at 1.15 pm in Varanasi, and also inaugurate development projects worth more than 5,200 crore in the region.

PMASBY will be one of the largest pan-India schemes to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country, the Prime Minister’s Office said. It will be in addition to the National Health Mission.

The objective of PMASBY, which will complement the National Health Mission, is to fill critical gaps in public health infrastructure, especially in critical care facilities and primary care in both the urban and rural areas.

It will provide support to 17,788 rural health and wellness centres in 10 high focus states. As many as, 11,024 urban health and wellness centres will also be established in all the states. The initiative aims to make critical care services available in all districts with a population of more than 500,000 through exclusive critical care hospital blocks.

People will have access to a full range of diagnostic services in the public healthcare system through a countrywide network of laboratories, under PMASBY. It will also see the setting up of integrated public health laboratories in all districts.

A National Institution for One Health, four National Institutes of Virology, a regional research platform for the World Health Organization’s Southeast Asia region, nine biosafety level III laboratories, and five regional national centres for disease control will be set up under PMASBY.

The scheme aims to establish an IT-enabled disease surveillance system by developing a network of surveillance laboratories at block, district, regional, and national levels, in metropolitan areas. The integrated health information portal will be expanded to all states and Union territories to connect all public health laboratories.

PMASBY also aims at operationalization of 17 new public health units (PHUs) and strengthening of 33 existing PHUs . It will also work towards building a trained front line health workforce to respond to any public health emergency.

Nine medical colleges will be inaugurated in the districts of Siddharthnagar, Etah, Hardoi, Pratapgarh, Fatehpur, Deoria, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, and Jaunpur of Uttar Pradesh.
