Puducherry's Education Minister, A Namachivayam has announced holiday for all government and private schools, as well as colleges today, i.e. December 3 due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Fengal.
1. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued in Puducherry today. Apart from Puducherry, yellow alert has also been issued in Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep.
2. In addition to this, RMC Chennai added that heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur and Tirupattur districts of Tamil Nadu today.
3. According to the IMD, the low-pressure area is likely to emerge into the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off the north Kerala-Karnataka coasts around December 3.
4. Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy said that the government has announced to provide relief assistance of ₹5,000 each to all ration cardholders affected by Cyclone Fengal. While speaking to reporters, he added, “Due to cyclone Fengal, Puducherry received 48% rainfall, which was unexpected. The Puducherry government has decided to provide relief assistance of ₹5,000 to all ration cardholders affected by the cyclone.”
5. Speaking on the damage cause by cyclone Fengal, the CM added that 10,000 hectares of crops in the Puducherry state have been damaged for which ₹30,000 per hectare will be provided to affected farmers.
6. Cyclone Fengal has left a trail of destruction in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The floods damaged 50 boats for which the government announced relief package of ₹10,000 for their repair."
7. Southern Command Indian Army took to X to share details on the rescue operation. It wrote, “Following a thorough assessment of the grim situation and detailed discussions with the District Collector of #Puducherry, an additional rescue column from the Madras Engineers Group has been staged forward from #Bengaluru to #Chennai to tackle rising water levels in low-lying areas."
8. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that Cyclone Fengal wreaked unprecedented havoc across 14 districts of the state, affecting 1.5 crore people and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release ₹2000 crore from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) immediately for restoration and rehabilitation work.
9. Earlier, Stalin also accused the central government of not allowing MPs to discuss the cyclone's impact in Parliament. "In Parliament, MPs were not allowed to speak about Cyclone Fengal. As part of our responsibility, we are assessing the damages and will send a report. That is our duty and responsibility. It is also their responsibility to respond, but they are refusing to do so. Despite this, we are doing our best," he told reporters in Chennai.
10. He also criticised Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami, saying that while the AIADMK leader continues to make accusations. "Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami's only responsibility seems to be levelling accusations against us. However, people know under which government welfare schemes are implemented effectively," the Chief Minister added.
