Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid made heartfelt appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he expressed deep concern about the growing communal tensions in the country. His concerns came amid ongoing mosque surveys in different regions of the country including Sambhal.
While holding prayers at the historic mosque, Bukhari said, “We are standing in a situation worse than the one we were in 1947. No one knows which way the country will go in the future," as quoted by News18.
He further added, “You (PM Modi) should do justice to the chair you are sitting on. Win the hearts of Muslims. Stop the miscreants who are trying to create tensions and affecting the atmosphere of the country."
Earlier on November 27, four people died and several others, including police personnel, were injured in Sambhal after a confrontation erupted over a court-ordered survey of the city's Shahi Jama Masjid in Kot Garvi area, following a petition claiming that a Harihar temple once stood at the site.
Prior to this, on November 27, a civil court in Ajmer issued notices to the Ajmer Dargah committee, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs and the ASI after a petition was filed by Vishnu Gupta, national president of Hindu Sena, claiming that the dargah was originally a Shiva temple.
Commenting on this, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the Places of Worship [Special Provisions] Act, 1991 needs to be followed. The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act prohibits changing the character of religious places from how they existed on August 15, 1947.
"Ajmer Sharif dargah represents the secular nature of India... Not just Ajmer Sharif dargah, but Salim Chishti dargah is also under scanner. Places of worship act needs to be followed," Owaisi told reporters.
December 6 marked the 32nd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition. The former litigant in the Ayodhya land dispute case Iqbal Ansari, said that there should be peace between Hindus and Muslims. "...What happened to Babri Masjid, the whole world knows, today we are not here to repeat the same things. Whatever happened, happened through court...(Supreme) court gave the order. A temple has been constructed and prayers are being offered. Whole Muslims in the country respected the decision of the Supreme Court...there should be peace between Hindus and Muslims..." he said as quoted by ANI.
