The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday, April 25, registered the first case against five influential people to investigate alleged land grabbing and sexual harassment charges, PTI quoted officials as saying.

The case relates to a land dispute where women of the victim's family were allegedly sexually assaulted by influential people in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali area. However, the probe agency has not yet disclosed the identity of the five accused.

On April 10, the Calcutta High Court had ordered a court-monitored CBI probe, stating that an "impartial inquiry" was needed to bring forth justice and ensure fair play. Following this, the investigating agency had circulated an email ID for people to raise complaints in such cases.

A large number of complaints were received by the CBI which then deployed a team in Sandeshkhali to ascertain allegations and proceed with the registration of cases where allegations could be prima facie verified.

After the field visit in the Sandeshkhali area, the CBI registered the first FIR based on allegations of land grab and assault at the hands of leading politicians and affiliated goons.

The court conducted a thorough inspection of revenue records and a physical inspection of agricultural land that was alleged to have been converted into water bodies for pisciculture. Following this, the court directed the central agency to file a comprehensive report and submit it at the next hearing, scheduled for May 2.

On April 13, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) released a spot enquiry report highlighting several human rights concerns.

The report stated, "The Commission’s spot enquiry has revealed several instances of atrocities inflicted upon the victims, which clearly demonstrate, prima facie, that there was a violation of human rights due to negligence in the prevention of such violation or abatement thereof by the public servant."

The report notes that the victims and villagers of the area were subjected to assault, threat, sexual exploitation, and land grabbing and were forced into unpaid labour. They were also denied the democratic right to vote.
