A Korean man was forced to plead guilty to raping his girlfriend for wanting a breakup after a video of the crime was captured on CCTV. However, it wasn't just another video.
In an interesting twist, according to a Korea Times report, his act of crime was recorded from the reflection of a washing machine lid.
Thanks to the washing machine, the investigators had footage of his attack, which the court accepted as critical evidence.
The 24-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of rape, indecent assault, and unlawful confinement.
Korea Times said the man was convicted of raping his then-girlfriend six times.
The incident occurred between March and April last year.
According to the Korea Times, citing the prosecutors, the man kept the woman in captivity for hours and sexually assaulted her after she wanted to break up.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the woman found him in possession of sexually explicit photos and videos of other women.
He was reportedly under trial for raping another of his former girlfriend at the time. The man had allegedly threatened to release a video of the assault.
The SCMP also said that the man was also accused of having sex with a minor.
The man initially pleaded not guilty because there was no evidence against him in this case, reported the Korea Herald. The prosecutors were relieved when the victim handed over a 39-minute security camera video.
According to the Korean Herald, though the footage showed them together, it didn’t capture any assault. When the investigators looked closely, they realised that they could see the rape reflected on the plastic lid of the washing machine.
The man who had earlier denied all charges against him pleaded guilty after the footage was presented in court.
“The defendant’s crimes are dreadful in nature, and he consistently tried to excuse his actions to the investigators while pursuing legal actions against the victim to pressure her. A heavy punishment is necessary,” the judge said during last November's sentencing.
He was initially sentenced to eight years, but he contested the sentencing. This year, he was imprisoned for seven years.
