Netflix has reportedly decided not to renew Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s $100-million deal. However, one-off projects might still happen. According to journalist Marina Hyde, this could be a strategic move as streaming platforms may wait in case the couple divorces, which could become a ratings goldmine.
Hyde believes their biggest hit was the 2022 documentary Meghan & Harry. Meghan’s latest show, With Love, Meghan, received poor reviews and low viewership on Netflix.
Meghan’s show has been criticised by more than journalists. Netflix comedians Whitney Cummings, Christina Pazsitzky and Katherine Ryan have also taken jabs at the Duchess of Sussex.
Cummings claimed the show is a veiled attack on the Royal Family. The Netflix show apparently mocks King Charles’ family through content like tea-making and appearances. According to Cummings, it is meant to send a message to the British royals rather than entertain viewers.
Hyde and her podcast co-host, Richard Osman, criticised the show’s concept, calling it “fatally flawed”. According to Osman, if Meghan Markle wants to revive her public image or earn significantly again, returning to acting is her best option, saying she could “name her price”.
“The reality is that a lot of people are hanging around in case there's a divorce. That might be why Netflix, or whoever it might be, who's got to deal with them, might keep a vague hand in,” the Daily Mail quoted Hyde as saying.
Hyde humorously suggested how Meghan Markle should “plan” her return to Hollywood.
“I would have married him [Harry]. Got the two kids, got divorced, then ran back to Hollywood to be Julia Roberts for my 40s, but she's not followed that plan,” she quipped.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry has dismissed rumours of trouble in their marriage and joked about the media’s frequent speculation. Speaking at the DealBook Summit in New York, he said the claims were baseless and fuelled by trolls who hope for their split.
