The most auspicious Hindu festival Diwali, also known as Festival of lights, symbolises the victory of good over evil and commemorates Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana.

On this day, devotees illuminate earthen lamps called diyas, symbolising symbolises victory, hope and prosperity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali. Expressing hope for harmony, happiness and prosperity, in a post on X, he stated, “Greetings on the occasion of Diwali. May this festival of lights illuminate our lives with harmony, happiness and prosperity. May the spirit of positivity prevail all around us.”

The Muhurat trading is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 21 and not on Monday, October 20. According to the circular on the exchanges, the Indian stock market will remain closed on this day except for the one-hour trading session.

• This year's Muhurat trading session will be of one hour from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM.
• Besides this, a 15-minute pre-open session will take place from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM.

According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar, banks across several parts of India will remain closed today, October 20, for Diwali.

Last week, the Supreme Court in its latest directive gave a green light to bursting of green firecrackers on the occasion of Diwali. However, the citizens need to be mindful of certain specified conditions to avoid bitter events during festivities.

• SC order stated, "Sale of green cracker will be permitted from 18th October to 21st October. Police authority to constitute patrolling team to keep an eye that only permitted products with QR codes are to be sold," Bar and Bench reported.
• A 14-hour time limit is set for bursting of crackers on Diwali day, which is between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
• This recent directive follows years of blanket ban on manufacture, sale and use of fireworks in the national capital.
