At the UK State Banquet hosted for US President Donald Trump and the First Lady, Melania, King Charles made a rare reference to an old news story as he joked about the ‘royal-obsessed’ former US President Richard Nixon.
In the warm and witty speech at the dinner, Charles reflected on the ‘unparalleled partnership’ between the US and the UK, and joked that Nixon had tried to arrange a wedding between him and his daughter in the 1970s.
In the 1970s, Nixon invited Charles and his sister, Princess Anne, to the US for an official visit. At that time, Nixon praised Charles as the royal family's “real gem,” saying that his visit “could do an enormous amount of good for US-British relations.”
Calling the two countries the ‘closest of kin,’ King Charles shared an anecdote of how ‘obsessed’ Nixon was with the British Royal Family.
“Throughout my life, from my very first visit to the United States in 1970 and over 20 visits since that time, I have cherished the close ties between the British and American people,” the King was quoted as saying by a People report.
“Had the media succeeded in the 1970s in their own attempt at deepening the special relationship, I might have been married off within the Nixon family!” he joked.
King Charles revealed that the then-US President Richard Nixon tried to arrange a marriage between him and his elder daughter, Tricia.
According to a People report, he had even been on an outing to a baseball game and was escorted to the state dinner for Tricia Nixon in July 1970. However, nothing ever came of that relationship.
On 12 June 1971, Tricia Nixon married Harvard Law student Edward F. Cox.
Meanwhile, young Prince Charles married Princess Diana, whom he later divorced, to reconnect with his first love, Camilla Parker-Bowles, now known as Queen Camilla.
