A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands, triggering tsunami warnings for Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre swiftly issued the alerts shortly after 3 pm, urging residents to take immediate precautions.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 38 km (24 miles). The seismic activity has raised concerns about the potential for devastating tsunami waves in the region.

Authorities in New Caledonia wasted no time in implementing a tsunami alert throughout the country. Residents have been instructed to evacuate coastal areas and seek higher ground. The Civil Security and Risk Management Department emphasized the importance of the evacuation, extending the warning to all islands in the region, including the Loyalty Islands and the mainland.

Meanwhile, the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazard Department has cautioned that the earthquake's magnitude holds the potential for destructive tsunami waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) along Vanuatu coastlines within minutes, and within an hour for more distant coastlines. The National Disaster Management Office in Vanuatu has urged residents to take immediate action and adhere to precautionary measures. Evacuation from coastal areas to higher ground is strongly advised, and people are encouraged to stay tuned to Radio Outlets for further updates.

In Fiji, the situation remains tense as the threat of a tsunami looms. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to stay vigilant and prepared for any evacuation orders that may be issued.

As the seismic event unfolds, neighbouring countries, including New Zealand, are actively assessing the potential impact on their coasts and preparing response measures accordingly.

It is crucial for residents in the affected regions to remain informed through official channels, follow evacuation instructions, and prioritize their safety in the face of this serious natural threat. The situation is evolving, and continuous updates will be provided to ensure the well-being of all residents in the affected areas.
