'Unfair to punish students because..,' Jaishankar on Indians facing deportation risk in Canada
The students assert that they were admitted to Canadian universities and colleges based on fraudulent offer letters and further accuse travel agents in India of orchestrating this fraudulent scheme.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that addressed the issue of students facing deportation risk in Canada.
During a press conference, Jaishankar emphasized that the Indian government has been actively involved in the matter from the beginning, advocating that the students had genuinely pursued their studies in good faith.
As reported by ANI, EAM noted, “If there were people who misled them, the culpable parties should be acted against. It is unfair to punish a student who undertook their education in good faith. I think, the Canadians also accept that it would be unfair if a student has done no wrong."
The students assert that they were admitted to Canadian universities and colleges based on fraudulent offer letters and further accuse travel agents in India of orchestrating this fraudulent scheme.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has sent deportation letters to approximately 700 Indian students after discovering that their admission offer letters were fraudulent.
A significant number of protesting students allege that they arrived in Canada in 2018, but their application for permanent residency was rejected after it was discovered that they had submitted counterfeit letters.
The Minister for NRI Affairs in Punjab has requested the involvement of the EAM, S Jaishankar, in the matter.
"These (700) students are innocent and have been cheated by the clique of fraudsters. I shall be highly grateful if you again look into the matter personally and take up the matter with concerned agencies including the High Commission of Canada and the government of Canada so that these students can be saved from being deported," reads a letter from Dhaliwal to Jaishankar.
Dhaliwal also appealed to the people of Punjab that before going abroad or sending their children for studies, the details of the college and the record of the travel agent who is placing your case must be checked.
