United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has claimed that US President Donald Trump's “goal” is to have “no tax” for anyone earning below $150,000 annually.
Speaking to CBS on March 12, Lutnick said, “how about no tax on tips? how about no tax on overtime? How about no social security? How about all those things — these are the kind of thoughts that will change America. I know what his (Donald Trump) goal is... no tax, for anybody who makes less than $150,000 a year. That's his goal. That's what I'm working for.”
The statement is being celebrated on social media by prominent Republican supporters like Benny Johnson, who posted the clip on X (formerly known as Twitter) to responses that praised Donald Trump, and called it a “great move” and “amazing”.
One user said, “This will likely be one of the most popular pieces of legislation to ever pass in American history. (sic)” One other called it “the largest tax cuts for the middle class in US history. Letting Americans keep what they have earned is a great start to making America prosperous.”
Another added, “No income taxes for those making under $150k would be a great move. it will help so many people and that policy could also stimulate the economy. (sic)”
Some users also celebrated the potential tax savings, exclaiming “Oh sh*t I fit in that category” and “That would be amazing!!”
However, not all were happy. One person questioned the legality and Constitutionality of such a move, “Would such a law be Constitutional? Under the Constitution's Equal Protection principles, federal law must be fair and treat all groups equally. In this case, a Trump-proposed law would create a clear distinction between two economic classes: those below $150,000 and those above it. Is this illegal? (sic)”
Another chimed in: “Why the $150k not 250k? What would the tax rate be at $150k (sic)”
Earlier, Donald Trump said he would like to remove taxes for citizens and replace it with tariffs on other countries. He has repeatedly voiced support for the move — even during his campaign to become President last year.
Speaking at the 2025 Republican Issues Conference at the Trump National Doral, Miami, on January 27, he advocated doing away with income tax for Americans, saying that it is “time for the US to return to a system that made us richer and powerful”. He added that the US should be enriching itself by “tariffing and taxing foreign nationals”.
“America's gonna be very rich again and its gonna happen very quickly. It's time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before,” Trump said.
“As I said in my speech last week, instead of taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations we should be tariffing and taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens. Does that make sense? Right?” he asked the clapping crowd.
The US administration has slapped tariffs on trading partners and allies, including Canada, after Donald Trump took over in January. The EU, Canada and China have vowed or enforced retaliatory measures.
