US President Donald Trump has confirmed that American forces have launched targeted airstrikes against Houthi militants in Yemen, vowing to use "overwhelming lethal force" to stop their attacks on US and allied vessels. In a strong statement, Trump also warned Iran against supporting the Houthis, declaring that Tehran would be held "fully accountable" for its actions.

US strikes Houthi bases and leaders

Trump announced the military operation in a post on Truth Social, emphasising the need to protect American interests and restore freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

"Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets," he stated.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been accused of launching repeated missile and drone attacks on US warships and commercial vessels in the region. Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for failing to take decisive action earlier.

Warning to Iran: ‘BEWARE’

Trump issued a direct threat to Iran, demanding an end to its support for the Houthis.

"Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, or Worldwide shipping lanes. If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!"

Defending global trade and security

Trump accused the Houthis of “choking off shipping in one of the most important Waterways of the World, grinding vast swaths of Global Commerce to a halt.” He stressed that the attacks on commercial and naval vessels threaten international trade and stability.

‘Hell will rain down’ if Houthis persist

In his strongest warning yet, Trump declared that further attacks by the Houthis would be met with even greater force.

“YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!”

Criticism of Biden’s approach

Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for failing to adequately address the Houthi threat, claiming that his weak response had emboldened the group’s attacks on American vessels.

“Joe Biden’s response was pathetically weak, so the unrestrained Houthis just kept going. It has been over a year since a U.S.-flagged commercial ship safely sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, or the Gulf of Aden,” Trump asserted.

He also highlighted a recent Houthi attack on a US warship, emphasising the danger posed to international trade and security.

“The last American Warship to go through the Red Sea, four months ago, was attacked by the Houthis over a dozen times. Funded by Iran, the Houthi thugs have fired missiles at U.S. aircraft, and targeted our Troops and Allies."
