The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has formed a joint task force with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to investigate a surge in vandalism and arson incidents targeting Tesla showrooms and charging stations. The move follows a wave of violent acts against the electric vehicle giant, which FBI Diretor Kash Patel has labeled as "domestic terrorism".
"The FBI has been investigating the increase in violent activity toward Tesla, and over the last few days, we have taken additional steps to crack down and coordinate our response," Kash Patel stated on X (formerly Twitter). “This is domestic terrorism. Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice.”
The newly established task force will include special agents and intelligence analysts from the ATF and members of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, including its Domestic Terrorism Operations Section and Weapons of Mass Destruction unit, as per The New York Post.
According to the FBI, incidents of vandalism against Tesla properties have been recorded in at least nine states since January. In Austin, where Tesla's headquarters is located, police discovered incendiary devices at a showroom on Monday.
Attorney General Pam Bondi also weighed in on the situation earlier, stating, "Attacks on Tesla property are nothing short of domestic terrorism. We will prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law."
The attacks appear to be linked to increasing public opposition toward Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who serves as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency in President Donald Trump’s administration. Musk’s prominent role in the government and his close ties to Trump have led to a wave of protests, some of which have turned violent.
President Trump himself has vowed to take a hard stance against the perpetrators. "We will not tolerate these cowardly acts of vandalism and terror. Those responsible will face severe consequences," he said in a statement. He also suggested deporting convicted vandals to a US-rented prison in El Salvador for 20-year sentences.
While violent attacks have occurred, a group known as Tesla Takedown has been organising peaceful demonstrations. The group, which includes activists, celebrities, and politicians, has scheduled a global day of protest for March 29, aiming for demonstrations at 500 Tesla locations worldwide.
"We do not condone violence," the group said in a statement. "Our protests are meant to be peaceful demonstrations against Musk's role in government overreach and his influence on economic policies."
Despite their stance against destruction, tensions continue to rise. From Brooklyn to Austin to the Bay Area, protests at Tesla showrooms have gained momentum, drawing more participants each week. In Canada, anger over Trump’s tariffs and Musk’s political influence has spilled over, leading to attacks such as the vandalism of 80 Tesla vehicles in Hamilton, Ontario.
In response to the ongoing threats, Tesla has activated additional security features at its showrooms. Elon Musk addressed the situation during a surprise company-wide meeting streamed on his X platform, assuring employees that the company remains strong despite stock turbulence.
"We are overall good," Musk said, encouraging employees to stay committed. “Hang on to your stock.”
